Bucket List Moments – Reading All The Nicholas Sparks Novels – Part 1

The man himself!

                          The man himself!

Okay, for a while now I have wanted to read the Nicholas Sparks novels that have inspired some of my favourite romance films. So when I saw one of them in a charity shop, I though why not start now, and promptly paid for the book. Since then I have found a few more in charity shops and bought several used copies from Amazon for really cheap.

After reading the first two books (not in the order they were written as there isn’t a continuous arc across the books), I thought I should start keeping track of how I felt at the end of each book, kinda like my synopsis that I could share with you all.

So here goes….

The Longest Ride

The Longest Ride

Much like the film, this book captured me after the first few chapters, even with the major differences in how it’s told. The intertwining storylines connect perfectly both on-screen and on the page & I love the way they are told; Ira & Ruth’s lives through flashbacks, while Luke & Sophia come together in the present.

Sparks has done a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life on the page and at times I felt like I was right there with them. It was almost like I was Ruth, a haze in the car wiling Ira to hold on for just that bit longer, bringing the memories of our lives together to life once more. Then I was Sophia, reading Ira’s letter to him in the hospital, trying to speak clearly for him despite the emotions clogging my throat.

AS with any truly great author, Sparks has created a story that really comes to life. This book is going to be one I treasure and reread over & again through the years to come.

At First Sight

At First Sight

I wasn’t really sure what to think when I started reading this book & upon reaching the final page, I was no closer . I felt the story started off in an odd place & as it developed things didn’t exactly become any better.

I felt the story took a long time to get going, then you were hit with a major twist & tragedy, before suddenly reading the epilogue and it was all over. I know it’s supposed to be a love story, but there seemed to be too much suspicion & minor conflict between the major characters for it to flow nicely. Not that I expected it to be all hearts, flowers & sappy words, but the almost abrupt ending left me feeling bereft, like a huge chunk of the book was missing that would make things fall into place.

Obviously this is purely my opinion and if you’ve read it & love it, I hope I don’t cloud your views at all. That is not what I want to do by far. I just want to share honestly how I reacted & felt; I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the book in the comments below.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven

I had already fallen in love with this story after watching the film, so to be able to read the book has been fantastic. Nicholas Sparks has yet again provided a detailed love story that also shows the darker side of relationships.

After watching the special feature on the DVD I know he wrote the storyline for Kevin Tierney, the abusive husband, first and then filled in the rest with Katie & Alex. This seemed odd to me when I first heard that, but after finishing the book it makes sense. Kevin is plagued by demons that affect a lot of us, but they drive Kevin to extremes; in the way he thinks, how much he drinks & then his resulting actions. Behaviours that are unfortunately all to common in life.

In contrast, the relationship between Katie & Alex is a lot brighter and simpler. Even with the shadow of Katie’s past looming over them, they both manage to find the best in the situation, building a new life together with his children. And Jo; well, I was intrigued to see how that had been written after seeing the film, and think Sparks incorporated her perfectly. The letter at the end was beautiful and it definitely brought tears to my eyes.

The Choice

The Choice

After the first few pages of this book I knew I was going to love the storyline. It starts off like most other romances, boy meets girl, and progresses steadily as you would expect. Then Nicholas Sparks throws a curveball into the mix. Of course we have the prologue as a hint, but all I was expecting was a separation or divorce, thinking Travis had cheated or something. But oh, no, it’s completely different, though I won’t give any more away if you haven’t read it yet.

The front of my book says ‘Now A Major Movie Picture’ but it hasn’t come out in cinemas in the UK yet. I have however, seen the trailer. I think the casting looks great, but from what I can tell, they’ve deviated quite a bit from the book. Now I know it can’t be an exact match in 1 1/2 -> 2 hours of screen time; but still, I noticed major differences that would have been easy to stick to.

Anyway, I look forward to watching the film, but I’m so glad I got to read the book first. Another great story to add to my growing library.

The Best of Me

The Best of Me

Again, this is one where I have seen the film and fallen in love with the story first. But it has truly been amazing to read the book and see how Nicholas Sparks originally wrote it all.

The storyline had me hooked from the first time I watched it, and reading the words has only reinforced that. I love how Sparks has created this modern romance, almost like West Side Story, different worlds colliding in this young couple before things inevitably spin out of control separating them. Then for them to be reunited many years later after their lives have changed so much – only to be irrevocably altered again in such a shattering way.

And then the off-shoot of Tuck and Clara, another great (if briefly told) love story that I would love more detail on. I would definitely buy the book if Sparks ever turned it into a novel of its own.

The love Dawson & Amanda have in the book, still strong even after so many years apart, is something that I long for but know I will be lucky to find if it ever happens for me.

Dear John

Dear John

I’m currently working my way through this one, so will give the low-down when I am done!

That’s all for now folks! Part 2 will be coming soon – once I have read a few more of the books!

Let us know if you have read any of the books and share your thoughts on them in the comments below! We would love to hear your views!

Film Friday – Mockingjay Part 2

Mockingjay Part 2

I went to see this last weekend, and my was it fantastic!

Even though I had read the book before and kinda knew what was coming, I was still scared and shocked in all the right places. I especially love how they end it (you will have to watch it to see what I mean!).

Check out the trailer below if you haven’t seen it already, then go and get tickets to the next showing at your local cinema!!!

Music Monday – Burlesque

I turned on my iTunes last night for the first time in a long time, and after a couple of songs it shuffled onto a couple of songs from the film Burlesque. Soooo, I thought they would make a great post for Music Monday…

Burlesque - Christina Aguilera and Cher

Of course we have a great song from Cher when we first enter the club…

The first song when they get to see who Christina can really sing…

A cheeky number from Aggie…

And of course the two great showstoppers: Express….

And Show Me How You Burlesque…

Burlesque - Christina Aguilera

Have you seen the film, or heard any of the songs before?

Film Friday – Part 1

Hi all!

As you can probably guess from the title of this post, I am going to be sharing some more films with you today. This time, instead of ones I have already watched and love, it is going to be ones that are being released this year that I can’t wait to see!

There are sooooo many films released every year. Big blockbusters that we see adverts for everywhere, and then the smaller, indie films that fewer people have heard of.

Now me, I kinda like the blockbusters. The kick-ass action films, the comedy that makes even the grumpiest person chuckle, the tear-jerking romance that always ends with a kiss, the musical that has the whole world singing along, and I quite like a good sci-fi as well (live long and prosper 😉 )

So, what has the Hollywood (and the British Film Industry) got in store for us in 2015?

The Theory Of Everything

Well, you may have already seen The Theory of Everything (I know I have) starring Eddie Redmayne as Steven Hawking. This is a fantastic film that brought tears to my eyes. It was fantastically portrayed and fully deserves whatever awards it may win!!! If you get the chance to see it at the cinema, I highly recommend it, but if it is no longer showing in your area, look out for it when it is released on DVD! And a quick congrats to Eddie who won the Oscar for Best Actor!!! 🙂

Into The Woods

Into The Woods is another great film that I was able to see the other day. It is a recently released musical that is based on some of the well know stories from the Grimm brothers. With some great actors and actresses including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine & James Cordon; this is quite a fun film, with some great songs throughout (maybe none quite as catchy as ‘Let It Go’ though). Give it a go, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Kingsman The Secret Service

I have also been able to see Kingsman: The Secret Service this past weekend. And can I say straight off – GREAT FILM!!! A fantastically portrayed spy film with some ‘on the edge of your seat’ action sequences and some brilliant humour. My friend and I laughed throughout at Samuel L. Jackson’s character (watch the film and you will know why). Again, some great names involved, Colin Firth takes the lead along with newcomer Taron Egerton; Michael Caine, Mark Strong and Sofia Boutella.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Following hot on the heals of the first film, Dev Patel returns along with a star-studded cast in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This film certainly promises to be bigger and better than the original, and even features Richard Gere. I am sat on the edge of my seat waiting for this film to come out!

I know the whole Cinderella and figurative glass slipper thing has been redone many times over the years, with modern and historical versions alike. But I am really looking forward to this film. I mean, who doesn’t want to see Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother?

The second part in the Divergent Series comes out next month – are you as excited as I am? Nuff said on this one I think.

Jupiter Ascending

This film looks like it is going to be another great action film with Channing Tatum & Mila Kunis, along with Eddie Redmayne in an intergalactic storyline. I don’t really see a problem here.

The Avengers Age of Ultron

Another action film, but this time The Avengers are back. Tony, Cap, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk and Romanov are back, with some new names in the lineup. And of course, our fave eye patch is back – Samuel L. Jackson is back in the game as Nick Fury. YAY!

Pitch Perfect 2

Ready to get “pitch slapped”? The second film is out soon! Have a girly sing-a-long with your bezzies to what is promising to be another corker of a show! I wonder if Rebel Wilson will demonstrate anymore Mermaid Dancing?! 🙂

We get another dose of Bond later this year! Should be another great film (although it will be a bit sad cus no more Judi Dench as M). Quick question, have you seen the new Aston Martin they are bringing out for the film?

There are plenty more films due to be released this year. I will be sharing some more with you all very soon! Stay tuned for another ‘To Watch’ list. 🙂

Today’s Film – Need For Speed

Need For Speed

I saw the trailer for the film Need For Speed a while ago and thought it looked good!

A few years ago I played a few rounds of one of the games on a friend’s Xbox 360 and had a blast! It was so much fun – not that I was particularly good at but I got into a groove and started to move up the ranks in the races (you had to get to the top spot on each race to move onto the next round).

So when I had the opportunity to watch the film today I thought, yeah, why not.

I mean the cars are GORGEOUS!!!!!!

Bugatti Veyron Super SportGTA SpanoKoenigsegg Agera RMcLaren P1Mustang ShelbySesto Elemento

And the stunts – well the Mustang Shelby flew through the air (I think they called the move a “Grasshopper”)!

There is also a stellar cast including Aaron Paul, Scott Mescudi, Ramón Rodríguez, Rami Malek and Harrison Gilbertson as the good guy crew…

Cast - Boys

Dominic Cooper as the bad guy…

Imogen Poots gets behind the wheel and manages to stay cool in the driver’s seat…

And Dakota Johnson appears as Dominic Cooper’s girlfriend/fiancée…

I had so much fun watching this film – a bit of a nail biter at times as well though.

Enough horsepower throughout the film to keep everyone’s engines running.

So, have you seen Need for Speed? Or is it still on your list of films to watch? Maybe you haven’t even considered it.
